Joyce’s race disqualification upheld
The governing body of amateur athletics in Canterbury, tbe Canterbury centre of the Amateur Athletic Association, has upheld the disqualification of a St Martins runner, Brenton Joyce, from the Christchurch Big M race, which was held in Christchurch on March 13. However, the centre has stopped short of acceding to the request of the race organisers, the University of Canterbury cross-country
and amateur athletics clubs, that disciplinary action be taken against him, and has said that the manner in which he was ejected from the race “cannot be condoned.” A sub-committee of the centre investigated the affair and reported back to a special meeting of the centre’s executive on Saturday. The centre issued the following statement: “The Canterbury centre in
no way approves of the manner in which race officials removed Brenton Joyce from the Big M race on March 13. “Following a meeting with representatives of the University and St Martins clubs, the executive, however, is satisfied that there was no organised, deliberate plan to attack the runner concerned. “The actions ■ of the officials are accepted to have been a spontaneous response to the unfortunate
action by Joyce, who had been clearly advised prior to the race of the requirement to display identification of his entry in the race. Joyce ignored the clear directions of an official to by-pass the finish chute and the unfortunate incident followed. The disqualification of Joyce from the race is upheld, but the manner in which it was expedited cannot be condoned. “The Canterbury centre
has received, and accepted, an apology from Mr J. Smart for his part in the affair. It is also understood that Mr Smart has met and exchanged apologies with Mr Joyce and that Mr Joyce specifically requested that the official concerned make no public apology. The centre executive will be issuing clear directives to all parties concerned in the hope that such a situation may be avoided in the future.”
