Credit ca rd survey

Petrol prices are not likely to rise soon to cover the loss of profit by service stations because of credit cards, according to the president of the Christchurch Motor Trade Association. Mr A. D. Kellaway.

The credit-card commission on each petrol sale makes up a third of the retailers' mark-up. and retailers are contemplating seeking an increase in their petrol retail margin.

“We are surveying Christchurch retailers on the effects of credit cards, but I cannot see any action being taken in the short term." Mr Kellaway said. An increase in the petrol retail margin to cover the effect of credft cards would mean that people paying cash would be subsidising card users.

“This is the only way we could go about it,” Mr kellaway said. “Trying to set a price for people who pay with cards and another for those who deal in cash would be impossible."
