Model T Ford in heart appeal
Greymouth reporter ■ A man who underwent successful heart surgery in 1980, Mr David Collier, of Auckland is expected to drive into Christchurch today in his 1914 Model T Ford, raising funds for the National Heart Foundation.
Mr Collier is sponsored and assisted by Lions Clubs throughout his journey from 'Cape Reinga to Bluff. Yesterday he recorded the 1000th mile of his journey, .while driving from Westport to Greymouth after an overnight stay. He arrived at Greymouth during the lunch-hour and was met by the Mayor of Greymouth Dr B. M. Dallas, the president of the Greymouth Lions Club, Mr R. H. Blackmore, and Mr I. Tennant, representing the Greymouth branch of the National Heart Foundation. Although Mr Collier was to have parked in Tainui Street, Dr Dallas, according to Mr Blackmore “commandeered,” part of the taxi rank in Mackay Street, outside Centrepoint, and helped by local members of the Lions Club. Mr Collier collected $366 in a short time on the footpath. Mr Collier drove to Hokitika yesterday afternoon for an overnight stay. He plans to leave for Christchurch today, confident that his vehicle will negotiate the Arthur’s Pass route.
