Appeal produces mystery picture

A Foundation for the Newborn house-to-house appeal on Monday brought mystery as well as money for the organisers, the New Zealand Round Tables.

The Canterbury organiser of the foundation, Mr Arthur Cartwright, said the appeal had gone “very, very well for Christchurch, with about $lB,OOO counted in the Christchurch area so far.”

The mystery for the organisers has been a photograph, which was found, with some money, in one of the appeal envelopes. “The photograph looks to be anything from 40 to 50 •years old and shows a woman holding a baby,” Mr Cartwright said. “It would have to mean something to someone,” he said. “There must be a reason for someone to send a photo.” Whatever the reason the foundation does not know what it is. Money from the appeal will be used by the foundation to finance research into perinatal care, and mental and physical defects in newborn babies. Mr Cartwright said that as the Round Table was a small service organisation it did

not manage to cover all of Christchurch in the appeal. “We would appreciate it if people would drop their appeal envelopes into a mail box,”. Mr Cartwright said. The envelopes have pre-paid postage.
