Rally to Rabbidge
Carl Rabbidge made the perfect start to the defence of his Mainland rally series title when he won the Eastern Southland rally at the week-end. Driving a Datsun 120 Y powered by the 2 litre motor Rabbidge intends fitting to a Datsun 160 J later in the season, the Timaru driver narrowly headed off the 1980 Mainland series victor.' Alan Hewlett (Kumara. Escort RS2000). Ross Bailey, of Springston. was heading for ’ third place in his Escort RS2OOO when the car's engine-bearings failed on the final stage, and he limped out to
finish fourth behind Graham . Crawford (Gore. Mazda 323 rot- ■ ary). The top Southland driver, Barry Robinson (Wyndham Chevette 2.3), started well down the field after experiencing alternator trouble before the first stage, and although he was ahead ; briefly a puncture and the ex- | tremely dusty conditions saw i him finish fifth. , The other three rounds of this j year's Mainland series will take i place in Westland (March 20). i Marlborough (May 1) and Canterbury (May 15 and 16.
