Education cuts
Sir, — While, the cuts in education spending are regrettable, every cloud has a silver lining. I refer to our Minister’s judicious decision to use the “razor” on both our school inspectors and departmental researchers. For an embarrassingly long period school inspectors at best have steered our education system into the shoals of mediocrity. But worse, they have actually become a party to a planned deception when dealing with external criticism; I refer to the report on standards in State schools. Added to this,' the lengths our inspectors will
go to in attempting to silence internal criticism would put a wild dervish to shame. As for the quality of research carried out by the Education Department, a telling observation from one of the participants at a recent A.N.Z.A.R.E. conference said it all — “the trouble is their pilot studies are bound to succeed." — Yours, etc., JOHN LEVERSEDGE, ■ C.E.S.A. March 8, 1982.
