Dunlop strike ends

The Dunlop rubber goods factory in Woolston resumed production early this morning after rubber workers had been on strike since 11 a.m. last Thursday. The workers went on strike over what they said were contradictory statements about company policy on cost-saving and efficiency. They met yesterday morning at the factory with the company’s industrial division director, Mr C. Walker, but did not return to work until midnight last night because of a union policy that all three shifts should have equal time out on strike. The president of the Canterbury Rubber Workers’ Union, Mr C. Hanson, said that the union was not particularly happy with the outcome of the talks yesterday, but talks would continue in the next few weeks. What was needed now was some practical progress. “Everyone is looking towards profitability, better processes, better maintenance, and so on, but you can’t achieve these simply by talking,” said Mr Hanson.
