Youths charged with aggravated robbery

An unemployed youth charged with the’aggravated robbery of the New Brighton Post Office last month was remanded to April 28 for the taking of depositions, when he appeared in the District Court yesterday. Duane Thomas Tito, aged 19, it is alleged, together with Mark Reginald Mantell and being armed with a carving knife, robbed Leslie Annette Toslan of 534.06 in cash, the property of the Post Office. Tito, who did not seek legal representation, also admitted four charges of burglary and one of breaking and entering the Duntroon Post Office on March 3. On these charges Tito was ‘ convicted by Judge Frampton and remanded in custody to March 15 for a probation report and sentence. Mantell (Mr M. J. Glue), who is jointly charged with the aggravated robbery of the New Brighton Post Office, was remanded in custody to March 22 so that a psychiatric report can be obtained. No plea was entered. An application by Mr Glue for the. continued interim suppression of his client’s name, granted on Saturday morning, was refused by the Judge.

SUPPRESSED The name and occupation of a man. aged 53. charged with-'indecehtly assaulting a girl, aged nine years 7 months, was suppressed in the interim. Counsel (Mr A.'J. Forbes) had sought the suppression orders for his client so that a medical examination could be carried out. The defendant, who .is charged with committing the offence on March 2. was remanded on bail to March 22. He did not plead. DAMAGE A freezing worker facing five charges of intentionally damaging 12 tyres, valued at $920, was remanded on bail to March 22. No pleas were entered by David Edward Cruther, aged 39, who is alleged to have committed the offences on Sunday. DRUGS A man alleged to have possessed cannabis for sale or supply, and with possessing lysergide (LSD), was further remanded in custody to March 15. Honard Alda Common, aged 27. a joiner (Miss E. Riddiford) is alleged to have committed the offence on March 5. No plea was entered.

HASSLES . “To many hassles in prison" was the reason an inmate gave when he pleaded guilty • to two charges of converting vehicles, two of theft, and one of escaping from Papa roa Prison last month. Raymond Robert Jobe, aged 33. was convicted and remanded in custody to March 15 for a probation report and sentence. Sergeant G. C. Jones said Jobe escaped from prison on February 22. At Hornby he converted a car which was later recovered undamaged at Amberley. Jobe was located in another converted vehicle in the Lewis P'ass area. .He was in possession of a pair of stolen sunglasses and $4O which was in one of the converted vehicles. Compensation of $24 was sought from the defendant. CHARGES DENIED A salesman facing two charges of fraud denied the alleged offences. Paul Robert Boby, aged 40, was remanded to May 3 for a defended hearing. The charges relate to Boby’s obtaining 2500 magazines, valued at $5970, which he allegedly obtained from a company by means of a false pretence. The offences are alleged to have taken place between October 30 and November 7, last year. Bail of $lOOO was renewed. PERIODIC DETENTION Two men earlier convicted of stealing and slaughtering a $350 breeding sow, were sentenced to periodic detention. Linton Frank Biehler, aged 24, unemployed, was sentenced to periodic detention for six months and put on probation for 12 months.

He was also disqualified from holding or obtaining a driver's licence for 12 months. Kevin Grant Houlahan. aged 20, a rabbit farmer, was sentenced to three months periodic detention and put on probation for 12 months. Jennifer Anne Houlahan, aged 18, unemployed, who had also admitted and been convicted, of stealing the pig, the property of Gysderius van Ameyderg, was given a 12 months deferred sentence. The pig was stolen from a Harewood piggery in the early hours of February 22. After being shot 13 times, the animal was butchered into three sections. The meal was found in a vehicle abandoned by the trio in a driveway when they found they were being followed by a police patrol car. Counsel for the three defendants (Mr W. Rosenberg) said the pig had been taken because Biehler needed it to feed his family. The $350 value of the pig was disputed and no order for compensation was made.
