New rowing lake
, Water has already started to flow into the man-made Lake Ruataniwha, near Twizel, and the South Island’s first full international rowing course will have its first trial run on April 24. The “tap” was turned on last Saturday and the new lake, part of the Upper Waitaki hydro project, will take all of 34 days to fill. An informal regatta over
the week-end of April 24 and 25 will coincide with the opening of the lake by the Minister of Works (Mr Quigley). Mr James Sheehan, the publicity officer of the Canterbury Rowing Association, said yesterday that the 2000 m course would eventually be “the equal if not better than Lake Karapiro,” the venue for the 1978 world championships.
