Favourites could miss Inter-Dominion Final

NZPA Perth Two of the favourites from New South Wales for the Inter-Dominion Pacing Championship, Lord Pancho and Out for Glory, are in danger of failing to qualifying for Friday week’s $160,000 final. Hochenheim, the sole New Zealand pacer in the series, will have to do much better than his opening night sixth to have any chance of winning a place in the final. He will run in the sixth qualifying division early tomorrow morning (New Zealand time). Lord Pancho and Out for Glory, both highly promising five-year-old stallions, need to earn points in the second round of heats at Gloucester Park.

They are at the bottom of the points table as a result of bad barrier manners on the opening night of the series last Friday. Out for Glory drew barrier No. 1 in the opening heat and his trainer-driver, Brian Hancock, expressed concern before the race that the horse might resent the inside position. His fears were well founded, as Out for Glory galloped almost uncontrollably when the starting tape was released. He was never a possibility and finished eleventh behind Popular Alm, earning only two of a possible 13 points. Lord Pancho also broke badly at the start and his driver, Kevin Bayley, attempted to settle him. But he missed out on any points after locking wheels with a West Australian pacer, Sharach. Both drivers were thrown from their sulkies. Hancock later requested that Out for Glory be excluded from the barrier draw for the remaining heats in a desperate attempt to improve his chances of leaving the standing start. “I think Out for Glory will follow other horses away from the back row,” he said. “If his manners improve in the heats, the stewards said they would consider placing him back in the barrier draw for the Final. “Although Out for Glory only finished eleventh I was very happy with his perform-

ance apart from that start,” Hancock said. “He made up a lot of ground and Fred Kersley (a top West Australian trainer) later told me that he had timed the horse to run a mile in Imin 58.55.” Out for Glory is 7-to-4 favourite to win the Sixth Qualifying Division, the last of the three heats to be held at the meeting. The third and final round of Inter-Dominion heats will be held on Friday. Popular Aim’s trainer, Bob Knight, said yesterday morning he was “quite happy” with the condition of the Inter-Dominion favourite. Popular Alm is perfectly placed at No. 5 on the front line and is 2-to-l favourite in early markets for this qualifying division, while Lord Pancho is rated a 6-to-l chance after drawing barrier No. 8. The points score after the first three qualifying divisions is: 13: Popular Aim,-Rheet’s Law, Willadios; 11: Skiptar, Jikk Adios, Neeron Boy; 10: Doubter, Christmas Adios, Captain Elect; 9: Winning Blow, Classic Prince.
