Great Pretender’s Greymouth Cup
The Canterbury visitor, The Great Pretender, stole the Greymouth Cup from the Westport mare, Faberge, in the last stride at the Greymouth Trotting Club’s meeting at Victoria Park last evening. Barnett had the drop on Faberge as they turned for home in the Cup but the gallant mare fought bravely and was beaten by' only a neck. The win last evening marked the first winning drive for Colin Barnett who also holds a half share in the ownership of the horse. Faberge was a hot favourite for the event and appeared likely to carry her supporters through as she set a merry pace. • The race was marred by a skirmish at the 2000 m, when Lord Thorpe ■ skipped for a few strides badly checking the well supported Chippie and putting paid to the chances of both runners. The second leg of the T.A.B. double saw a comfortable win to Ginger Creek. He was given a much easier passage to the lead this time and after being pushed out at the 400 m by Eddie Cowie he raced away to win by six lengths. Jimmy's Pride, a first night winner, was a good second after being well back early (T.A.B. code:GY) Track firm, weather fine HORNSBY BUTYNOL MOBILE STAKES $1650; CO; 2200 m 3-3 TIMELY REWARD 4 It , J.
