Shipping News
World shipbuilding orders dropped during the third quarter of 1981, for the first time in nearly three years, according to Lloyd’s Register of Shipping. Both oil tankers and bulk carriers were affected. Shipbuilders in Japan were the hardest hit by the drop in orders. New orders for Japanese-built ships in the third quarter of 1981 slowed to three million gross tons, compared with 5.6 million in the previous quarter and 3.6 million for the same period in 1980. Orders for the first nine months of 1981 were estimated at 13.4 million tons, compared with 14 million for the same period in 1980. The total order book at the end of September amounted to 36.4 million tons, down 1.09 million tons, or 2.9 per cent. Of this, 24.74 million tons, or 68 per cent, are due for delivery by the end of this year. The sharp drop of 1.27 million tons to 13.4 million tons, nearly 10 per cent, in Japan’s order book, was the first decline since March, 1979.
