Couple secures riding titles

PA Gore The husband and wife team of Penny and Colin Mclntosh, from Kaikohe, won the two main showjumping events of the Benson and Hedges Horse of the Year Show at Gore yesterday. Penny won the Southland Stakes for the Bryon Horrell Memorial Trophy in a close and exciting jump on Jet Set off the clock She was one of two riders to go clear in the second round of the AM4 event, the other being Michelle Anderson from Waikato on Dusky. Both incurred four faults in the jump-off with Penny recording the best time of 38.6 seconds.

Both Jet Set and Dusky were sired by the same stallion, Dusky Hunter. Colin triumped over a strong field later in the afternoon to take the first .prize purse of $5OO in the Bell Tea Grand Prix. He guided Kowhai Ridge (an exSouthland horse) through the two-round event without incurring any faults, a highly commendable performance considering the degree of difficulty of the course constructed by the guest coursebuilder, Peter Cooke, from

Western Australia. lan Campbell, of Tirau, and Calico Joe was the only other team to go clear in the first round, which incorporated a testing double and treble. But a rail down in the second round saw him notch a four-fault total and gain second position. Third place went to Tom Cruse and Ho. Mr Cooke said he was slightly disappointed with the competition in that a jumpoff did not eventuate, but it had been an excellent effort by Colin Mclntosh and Kowhai Ridge. Mr Cooke said he had intended to make the course a particularly difficult one but had expected at least three or four horses to record faultless rounds. In the dressage and show classes on Saturday, Susan Talbots of Ongaonga won four big events on her snappy little chestnut gelding Singleton. The pair gave an excellent performance in the difficult Prix St George dressage class to beat New Zealand’s best, scoring a total of 1361 points. ’ The Nelson duo of Sue Wells and Aztec won second

placing narrowly, from Merran Hain of Gisborne and Smiley John, by one point Singleton’s other accomplishments for the day were the supreme champion hack and the lightweight hunter, best paced and best mannered hack, and best ladies’ hack classes.
