Radio U

Sir,—For this last long, hot, and dry summer, Christchurch music fans have had the chance of dwelling in an oasis — Radio U, the university students’ station. In this world of sledgehammer commerciality, and high-rotation populism, Radio U has shown, albeit with a rather lassez-faire programming flair (Androids, Ritchie Venus, Tom Verlaine and muesli don’t usually mix at 8.00 a.m.), that enthusiasm and personal tastes make lor a viable radio alternative. This is not to say that the students have it all sussed; I mean, you often cannot understand, a mumbling word uttered by the would-be Dr Rocks, and there are amazing volume fluctuations be-

tween pre-recorded and “live-to-air" material. But I can live with that for the sake of musical entertainment. If FM licences ever become available I, for one, hope that the students receive one — for effort.—Yours, etc.,

BRENT HANSEN. March 3, 1982.
