New unloading system
Skulptor Zalkans. a member of the Baltic Shipping Company's roll-on fleet, will be the first ship to use a new unloading system at Lyttelton. The ship is due to berth at 6 p.m. today and will use the quarter-rainp unloading system on the newly-built concrete pad at the No. 7 East wharf. This means she will drop a ramp on the wharf to discharge and load cargo. Skulptor Zalkans is a 12.834tonne vessel which was built in 1978 at the Gdansk shipyard in Poland. She will be in port for .only one day to unload general cargo such as machinery and cars. The ship has already visited Auckland and Napier, and will sail to Bluff after leaving Lyttelton. While at Lyttelton she will load wool and other general cargo. This is the first time ■ Skulptor Zalkans. which is registered in Leningrad, had visited New Zealand as part of the Baltic Shipping Company's liner service to this country. Russian ships visit Lyttelton about once a month, the next one being due in April, according to a spokesman for Scales, the ship's agents. Skulptor Zalkans' first port of call in Europe will be Genoa where she is scheduled to arrive on April 17. Captain N. Pavlov is in charge of the vessel. ARRIVALS Royal Sea (12.30 p.m.) 4231.
