Easy win for Australians

PA Nelson The ■ touring Australian cricket team romped to an easy 63-run win over a Nel-son-Marlborough combined side in a relaxed and informal encounter at Nelson’s Trafalgar Park yesterday. Without the pressure of first-class or international play, the Australians were allowed to unwind and provided the capacity crowd of about 3000. with a light and entertaining spectacle. Batting first after winning their seventh successive toss in seven tour matches, Australia scored 195 with the opener, John Dyson’s, 97 completely dominating the innings.

Dyson batted for 171 minutes before being dismissed in the second to last over of the innings, hitting 13 fours and a towering six to record the second highest score of the tour so far. He offered only one chance in a. relaxed but tidy knock when the • Nelson-Marl-borough captain, Jock Edwards, failed to pick up a leg-side catch behind the wicket with,Dyson on 74.

Swashbuckling knocks of 24 by Bruce Yardley and 23 by Jeff Thomson were the only other major contributions in an innings highlighted by the casualness of the tourists’ top batsmen. J. Smith and A. Jones made a slow but competent

beginning. . taking NelsonMarlborough through to 14 at lunch. But things began going awry when, on the first ball after lunch Smith was run out for one. The second wicket fell only four runs later when Roger Pierce was caught by Rod Marsh off the bowling of Greg Chappell and the third came soon after when Jones fell in similar circumstances. Jock Edwards, the only recognised batsman in the combined side’s line-Up. hit four fours in a characteristically brisk 18 before being bowled by'Chappell with the total 48. The combined side’s tail provided the most resistance to the makeshift Australian bowling line-up which saw batsmen Graeme Wood take two overs towards the end of the innings. Scores:— AUSTRALIA G.
