Road safety views sought
Canterbury people will be asked by the Combined Christchurch Organisations Road Safety Committee for suggestions on road safety and ways to reduce the road toll. The committee which was established to investigate ways of achieving greater road safety, will undertake an advertising campaign to solicit ideas from the public. Suggestions will be screened by the committee and will be forwarded to Parliament’s Select Committee on Road Safety for study. Christchurch committee, which is made up of representatives of 21 organisations, held its second meeting yesterday. Its first meeting was held in October last year. A steering committee of seven, with power to coopt has met at regular intervals.
Mr G. E. Langham, of the Canterbury. District Law Society, at yesterday’s meeting, said that it was essential to go straight to the public to get its feelings on the issue.
Mr A. H. Kunowski, of the Christchurch Polytechnic, said that once a clearing house for suggestions had been set up, the committee could direct any inquiries to the appropriate” authorities.
People with ideas on ways to curb the road toll are asked to write to “Road Safety,” Post Office Box 994, Christchurch.
Mr Kunowski said that the Christchurch Polytechnic could soon offer learn-to-drive classes similar to those taught in Timaru.
The committee passed a recommendation seeking the immediate .implementation of a three-tier driver’s licence scheme which has been under study by the Ministry of Transport.
