Board scraps free X-rays
The North Canterbury Hospital Board will discontinue its free chest X-ray service to save money. However, the Department of Health’s free X-ray service will continue. The chief executive of the board, Mr R. I. Parker, said yesterday that the non-diag-nostic service was not covered by a Social Welfare benefit. A charge of $l6
would now be made for the service. , It was not a function of the board to provide a free service and by discontinuing it a better medical service could be provided to detect and help treat illnesses. It is not known how much money the board will save by the measure but it is believed to be several thou-sand-dollars a vear
