Popular Alm now likely starter

NZPA Melbourne Last-minute discussions have been successful in arranging transport to Perth for the Victorian pacer, Popular Alm, for the opening heats of the Inter-Dominion Championship tomorrow. The horse’s trainer, Bob Knight, yesterday completed discussions with executives of Ansett and the InterDominion Trotting Council to take Popular Aim to Perth tomorrow morning. A slightly modified berth has been constructed for the horse, which will travel alone to Perth.

The secretary of the InterDominion Trotting Council, Mr John Aughey, said the new berth was the same size as the one in which the horse had gone berserk last Sunday night but padding had been added and changes made to the flooring. Should the four-year-old consent to being loaded on to the plane he is certain to be reinstated as favourite for the $260,000 championship. Along with bis fellow Victorian, Gammalite, Popular Alm had ruled as favourite since handicaps were released.
