Sofia hulk seen?

PA Whangarei A floating hulk believed to be the wreck of the topsail schooner Sofia has been sighted off North Cape, said a Ministry of Transport spokesman yesterday. The Ministry’s Marine Division has asked an Orion aircraft to investigate the sighting. The division’s receiver of wrecks in Whangarei, Mr Nelson Connelly, said yesterday that a Leigh fishing boat sighted the mast of a submerged boat about one nauti-' cal mile off North Cape on Tuesday. He said he had assumed that it was the Sofia as it was on the same course that the survivors’ liferafts had taken. He said the hulk was a danger to navigation particularly because it would not be visible by radar. Mr Connelly said that if the wreck was the Sofia he would get in touch with the owners to see if they wanted to try and salvage her. However, he said his first responsibility was to remove the hulk so it was not a danger to shipping.
