Good sale for Romney ewes

Annual draft Romney ewes topped $24 for the first time this season at the Addington store sheep sale yesterday. Several good lines of annual draft sheep from Banks Peninsula were yarded. The top price of $24.80 was received by J. R. Stanbury (Little River) for 460 shorn Romneys. The best of the two-tooths also had a good sale. Perendales made to $3l for a ling from G. < Steele (Port Levy) and Corriedales from the Hawkswood Estate (Parnassus), sold to $28.40. In all sections, heavy sheep with large frames were in demand, but as has been the case at most store sales' this season, sheep that were light sold at discounted prices. Most of the sheep yarded were showing the effects of the prolonged drought. Buyers concentrated on stock with enough condition to take the ram. A total of 2437 two-tooths (3497 last week) and 9998 old ewes ; (9929) were yarded. Store lamb values increased for the second successive week.. The market was described as very firm and shorn lambs in a good forward condition were in demand. Buyers showed • a preference for strong-wool wethers, such as Perendale, Romney and Coopworth. Many of the woolly lambs offered sold at less than the market rate. Most of the lambs were in a light condition, but a few pens of heavy lambs sold for more than $l6. Many sales were made between $lO and $12.50. The total yarding of store i lambs was. 6035 compared with

4767 last week. Buyers from outside Canterbury were operating- . ■ . . With the calf-selling season approaching, a line of calves in the store cattle section created considerable interest. The calves from E. A. Hutchinson (Little River) are sold about the same time each year and can give an indication of prices for the coming season. Twenty-four Hereford-Short-horn cross steer calves sold from $162 to $2OO, and 23 heifer calves sold from $125 to $l6B. The adult cattle yarding was small with only 159 yarded.
