British Minister to visit

PA Wellington One of Britain’s deputy Foreign Ministers, Mr Humphrey Atkins, will visit New Zealand this month on a Government-sponsored tour. Mr Atkins, who is the Lord Privy Seal, has special responsibility for Asian and Pacific Affairs. Lord Privy Seal is the title given to the Government spokesman on Foreign Affairs in the House of Commons, when, as with Lord Carrington, the Foreign Secretary is a member of the House of Lords.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs (Mr Cooper) said the visit would give Mr and Mrs Atkins an “opportunity to see at first hand economic and social aspects of life here and to learn of the importance we necessarily place on access to the European Community.” Visits by British ministers were always welcome and served to “reinforce the valuable economic and political ties between our two countries,” he said.
