Jamie Hickox gave England a , flying start with a 10-8. 9-7, 9-3 win over Hugh Lebourn who lost his rhythm after an exhausting first game that lasted about 45
minutes. New Zealand’s hopes were revived when the junior national champion. Danny McQueen, took the first game 9-6 in the second tie against Christy Willstrop. But Willstrop changed his tactics in the second game, refusing to get into long rallies and scoring winners with deft drop shots. . The third tie. which was only of academic interest after England had taken an unbeatable 2-0 lead, saw England’s Martin Bodimead go down 1-9. 6-9. 9-3. 4-9 against Robert Wyatt.
