Chess win for N.Z. player

New Zealand had its first win at the Asian zone chess championships on Saturday wnen Bruce Watson, aged 21. of Auckland. beat S. Antonang. of Indonesia
The New Zealand champion. Vernon Small, of Christchurch, said Watson had been very lucky in his second game against Suchart Chaivichit of Thailand. Small, who had a bye in the first round, accepted his second draw yesterday against Max Fuller of Australia. The two New Zealanders are playing in separate 11-man groups. The top five players from both groups will go forward to the final round.
Small’s group is led by China s international master Liu Wenzhe. with 2*2 points from three games. The other group, which includes the defending champion Eugene Torre, of the Philippines, is led by Suchart with 2 points.
Grandmaster Torre has I's points after drawing a bye on Saturdav.
Following are the results of the third round of the Asian qualifying zone of the World Chess Championships held in Hong Kong on Saturday: Group A: S. Aritoriang (Indonesia) lost to B. Watson (New Zealand) 0-1. lan Rogers. (Australia) beat Luk Luen Wah (Hong Kong) 1-0, J. Liew (Malaysia) drew with Greg Hjorth (Australia) 14-14 R. Mascarinas (Philippines) v R. Rodriguez (Philippines) match adjourned. S. Chaivichit (Thailand) v Goh Cheng Hong (Singapore) match adjourned. Group B: Max Fuller (Australia) drew with V Small (New Zealand) 14-14. S. Sitanggang (Indonesia) beat Mohammed Ismail (Brunei) 1-0. R. Balinas (Philippines) vs S. Mahmud (Indonesia) match adjourned. Li Zuman (China) v R. de Guzman (Philippines) match adjourned S. Jhunjhunwala (Hong Kong) lost to Liu Wenzhe (China) 0-1.
