Meat centenary
PA Dunedin The centenary of New Zea- . land s first shipment of frozen meat to Britain will be celebrated in North Otago today. A ceremony involving the Governor-General (Sir David Beattie), senior politicians, and the Meat Board will be held at Totara Park, south of Oamaru. where the first sheep were prepared in 1882.
The first shipment of frozen carcases, beginning New Zealand’s single biggest export earner, left Port Chalmers in the ship Dunedin, especially refrigerated for the occasion. A container of lamb will be dispatched today, its ultimate destination in May being the Queen Elizabeth Children's Hospital in London. .• ’ Centennial feature pages 39 to 52.
