Singles title won by Norm Wales
Norm Wales gave hiS Woolston Park bowling club added cause to remember the 1981-82 season when he won the champion-of-cham-pions singles title on the sweet-running Beckenham green yesterday.
Earlier this summer Woolston Park underlined its rapid development of the last few years by opening a new pavilion, and it was also given reason for pride when, at about the same time, its top Three-fours team won promotion to division one.
In the final yesterday Wales beat the 1980 winner, lan Scott (Dallington), 25-15. It was a game Wales dominated from a fairly early stage, consistently outdrawing Scott and being on target, too, with the few drives he had.
Scott was 5-2 up early but nine points on five successive ends in the middle stages took Wales out to a 15-7 lead.. He played a great drive to remove two bowls for a three on the fifteenth end and this pushed his advantage to 18-9.
Even on the shorter heads favoured by Scott, Wales had the better drawing touch and a three on the nineteenth end, when Scott had no luck with a drive, put him close to victory at 23-10, the final being extended from 21 up to 25 up.
Wales lay game on the
next end until Scott drove thej jack into the ditch and Scott narrowed the gap a little with twos on the next two ends.
On the twenty-third end Scott held the shot, but Wales played a superb last bowl to wrest it out and score the two he needed.
The victory gave Wales his third centre title, the first two, both some years ago, being in fours. And this is the second time that Woolston Park has won the prestigious Maddison Trophy, the first occasion, when the club was known as Woolston, being in 1954 when Frank Sheard was the champion. Wales will now represent Christchurch in the national champion-of-champions, sponsored for the first time this year by the Northern United Building Society, at Papakura next month.
The tournament began on Saturday and two of the favoured candidates, Wally Wilkinson (Beckenham) and Sonny Calder (Linwood) were both eliminated in the first round, Wilkinson by George Matthews (Kaiapoi) and Calder by Alan Jones (Darfield). Results from the second round were;Second round
