Mr W. M. Dowle
The chairman of the Kaikoura County Council. Mr William Mathias Dowle, has died at his home at Goose Bay after a long illness. Mr Dowle was born and educated in Central Otago and joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force at the outbreak of World War 11. He saw service in Britain and Africa as a navigator. After the war he returned to New Zealand and was a high country musterer in Marlborough. before taking up farming at Goose Bav in 1951. Mr Dowle was elected to the Kaikoura County Council as the representative for the Hundalee riding in 1971. becoming chairman of the
council in 1976. He became the Kaikoura representative on the Marlborough United Council on its formation and was vice-chairman of the National Noxious Plants Authority. Mr Dowle took a keen interest in community af ; fairs, serving for some years as chairman of the Kaikoura branch of Federated Farmers. He served for 24 years on the Oaro School Committee. holding the offices of both chairman and secretary, and he was a vicepresident of the Kaikoura branch of the Returned Services Association, and helped form the Kaikoura ■ Farm Advisory Club. He is survived by his wife, one daughter: and five sons.
