NZPA staff correspondent Hong Kong Twenty-one-year-old Bruce Watson, of Auckland, playing in his first major overseas tournament. lost his opening match of the Asian zone chess championships in Hong Kong, conceding defeat against Rico Mascarinas. of the Philippines, after 54 moves. The match was one of four adjourned al the end of the
opening session of the championships. New Zealand's other competi tor. the national champion Vernon Small, of Christchurch, had a bye yesterday and was then scheduled to’ play Japan's K. Oda. The two New Zealanders are drawn in different groups of the championship, which has attracted 22 of the top chess players from Asia. Australia and New Zealand.
