Good softball win for Canty
s The . 1982 national women's softball, title-holder, Canterbury, turned on a polished perforriiance last evening to beat Canada. 2-0. Both Canterbury's runs came in the first innings when Robyn Storer scored off an error after making base on a safe hit. Linda Manning followed across home plate, again on errors, to give Canterbury a strong start to the match. Scoring opportunities went begging for, Canterbury in the fourth and fifth innings.’Then the match came alive in the sixth, when Cheryl Kemp hit safely to centre-field to bring home Jane Earnshaw. A brilliant peg from Canada's Dawn Slorev-Gray to the catcher had Earnshaw out. but she dropped the ball and Earnshaw
was called safe. The Canadian coach then appealed and alter much discussion between the umpires. Earnshaw was declared out. leaving the score at. 2-0. For Canada. Storey-Grav and Cindy Brown were’ the’ only batters to make base in the entire game.
Canterbury's pitcher. Kemp, safed 23 batters, took nine strikeouts. and conceded only two hits, while Rose Fuller, for Canada, safed 25 batters, took three strike-outs, and conceded seven hits. .
In the curtain-raiser. Canada gave Mid Canterbury no opportunity at all to get into the game, taking the match out in five innings. 11-0. The Canadian pitcher. Patti Polych, took a creditable 10 strike-outs after facing 16 hatters.
