Tax takings jump
PA Wellington The Government's income tax-take for the last nine months of last year increased much more than the rate of inflation to total almost 28 per cent more than 1980. u t In the nine months to December 31 last year, the Government collected $3.6 billion in income tax alone—--27.9 per cent more than the $2.8 billion in income tax collected the previous year.
Customs duties, sales tax. and beer duty rose by an even greater margin of just under 36 per cent, highways tax was up more than 12 per cent, petrol tax rose 4.5 per cent,and all other taxes rose by almost 30 per cent. The total tax revenues, for the period amounted to $5.23 billion, up by 28.5 per cent on the 1980 period. Releasing the. figures, the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) said taxation had slightly exceeded forecasts.
