Fast cycling win
Craig Adair became a firm favourite for both the national cycling kilometre time trial championship, and a place in the New Zealand team for the Brisbane Commonwealth Games, at the opening session of the Canterbury hard track championship at Denton Park on Thursday evening. Adair, still a junior, rode the fastest championship kilometre in New Zealand domestic cycling history, to win the Canterbury open title, and junior medal, in Imin 9.335, against a stiff easterly.
Adair was outside the Imin 9s standard set by the selectors for Brisbane selection, and 0.4 s slower than Anthony Cuff rode at Cooks Gardens, Wanganui, last week. Cuffs time was accomplished during a series of special attempts, not a championship meeting, whereas Adair was given no opportunity to await favourable condition. Cooks Gardens is New Zealand's fastest track, and there
Murray Steele went 1:9.25. This week he rode Imin 10.8 s. which was 1.47 s slower than Adair's time.
Steele edged Brian Fowler out of the silver medal, Fowler doing a personal best of 1:10.91s.
The three medal-winners were comfortably clear of the rest, led by Blenddyn Wills, in 1:13.65, and then Kelvin Steele (1:14.75), William Rastrick (1:14.77), Jamie Nisbet (1:15.00), Tony Fuller (1:15.01), Tony Strang (1:15.02) and Greg Fraine (1:15.16). The boys’ 500 m title went to a junior. Jason Smith, in 37.73, a time 0.51 s clear of Darrel Kircher, and Shayne Hendren in 38.505. Then came Tim Clyne (38.845), Dean Harvey (38.865), Phillip Gibbs (39.37). Dean Kinzett (39.52), George McAloon (39.55), Richard Bruce (39.97), and another junior, Brendon Kiesanowski. in 40.205.
