Protester jailed for contempt

PA Auckland' An Avondale labourer, Hone Harawira, aged 27, the defendant in a depositions hearing for a group of antitour protesters, was yesterday sentenced to five days jail for contempt of court. Judge Callander sentenced Harawira after he refused to withdraw a comment the Judge ruled was contemptuous of the Court.

“You made a comment which I again consider to be contemptuous and my order will stand,” the Judge said. Hone Harawira was one of 24 defendants who appeared in the District Court at Auckland yesterday for the fourth day of the depositions hearing. The defendants faced joint and individual charges of taking part in a riot, being members of an unlawful assembly, riotous destruction of a police car, assault on police officers, and injuring with intent to cause bodily harm. The hearing will continue today.
