Population of N.Z. put at 3,195,800
PA Wellington New Zealand’s population has been put at 3,195,800 at December 31, 1981. The Government Statistician said yesterday that during the quarter ended December 31 there was an estimated increase in population of 49,000, resulting from a natural increase (excess of births over deaths) of 6000 and a net gain through migration of 43,000. In the corresponding quarters of 1980 and 1979 there were increases off 45,100 and 44,900 respectively. The provisional estimated mean population for the year to December 31, 1981, was 3,157,300.
The estimate of total population was based on the census of population and dwellings of March 24, 1981.
