Regal Cheval bright prospect at Ashburton

Regal Cheval looked desperately unlucky when she finished sixth, some five lengths from Fouroux in the Bryan Register Handicap at Addington Raceway last Friday.

A versatile pacer over all distances, she will have a grand chance of making amends for her Rangiora part-owner and trainer, Maurice Vermeulen, when she contests the Grain and Seed Merchants Handicap, to be run over 3200 m at Ashburton tomorrow. Regal Cheval lost a splendid position in the middle stages of her race at Addington and looked, to be right out of contention starting the last 800 m when Aventureux carried her right back through the field. That she was able to make ground and finish sixth says much for her ability and she will need to receive only a reasonable run to come .out on top. Fouroux. a stylish if narrow winner at Addington, must again be considered. His best form is top-class even if his record has not been marked by consistency. Dryden Amanda made an impressive start to her six-year-old racing when she finished fourth at Addington last Friday in what was her first start since June. If she has made the expected improvement as a result of that run. she should go close this week. Amaze, Ariemore and Dreamy Dragon appeal most of the others, but a big run from Genesis will not surprise. Portfolio will be continuing his preparation for next Wednesday’s $50,000 New Zealand Derby Stakes when he contests the Radio Ashburton Handicap, also to be run over 3200 m. Such a race on a grass track is a fairly formidable test for a three-year-old, but Portfolio looks capable of winning. His racing has been marked by sound displays of stamina. However, he might be extended to match the Richard Brosnan representative. Lumber Jack, a winner at three of his last four starts. Previously an erratic pacer, he is much more solid now and from 10m his chances look second-to-none. Royal Lopez. Yankee Hall and Scottish Sunset are others expected to race prominently.
