Tough karate tests

The physical and mental application of two karate players will be put to the test tomorrow when they are involved in non-stop fights over a long period of time. Before the chief examiner and instructor of the International Karate Association's Gosoku Ryu style (Shihan Dai Rupe), the" two exponents. Dave Toko and Rangi Huri. will be in combat for about three hours and two and a half hours, respectively.

Toko, aged 25. will be trying for a third degree black belt and has to survive 150 consecutive fights. Huri. aged 22. will be striving for a second degree black belt and has to endure 10Q fights. Both karate players are formerly from the North Island and were instructed by Shihan Rupe when he was teaching in Auckland. They have since moved to Christchurch where Rupe has established his headquarters.
