National Party policy
Sir,-The opinions of Gabrielle van Bree and L. Westney (February 6) can be linked by a remark overheard on a New Zealand beach crowded with bathers clad only in briefs and bikinis: “Their children will be slaves. Never has the world been ruled by a naked race." One correspondent is upset by the topless law; the other facetiously renames National the Caucus Party. One man makes the decisions, the rest meekly agree or miss on Cabinet posts. In the meantime 60 per cent of the voters have their representatives effectively barred from active participation in the country's affairs. This worries the thoughtful; but most are easily distracted by that master of diversion at the head of the Government. The timing of the topless law shows he has done it again and will continue to grab power unless we stop him. The answer is proportional representation which would give Parliament once again the power now’ being filched from it by stealth. If we do not act. we head for loss of our freedom.—Yours. etc.. A. M. COATES. February 8. 1982.
