Two-tooths sell well at Kaikoura fair
In spite of limited buying power values at the Kaikoura ewe fair yesterday were better than those' of last year. Vendors at the sale were worried that the prevailing dry conditions in most North Canterbury areas would seriously inhibit the success of the sale. But two-tooths sold strongly, especially the better bred lines. The only sheep hard to sell were those lacking condition,, a reasonable set of teeth, wool, or a combination of any of these three factors. C. A. McGregor (Greenhills) again topped the sale with a line of 60 Romneys selling at $28.80. Last year his best price was $24:80, and in 1980 $35. Considering cartage costs involved in transporting stock from Kaikoura the better twotooths sold easily as well as those offered at the special twotooth sale at Addington last Friday. Lighter two-tooths were $2 to $4 cheaper. Although the Kaikoura district has had two difficult summers in a row the quality of the twotooths offered yesterday was good. Some sheep were a little small but most were evenly
woolled and well brought out. Coopworths did not sell as well as Romneys. Most Romneys sold between $2O and $25 but the best Coopworth sale was at $23 and a number were below $18.50.
Adult sheep have shown a marked variation in value during the last three Kaikoura sales. In 1980 several lines of five-year ewes sold between $23 and's2s. Last year this range dropped to between $16.40 and $19.40 and this year to between $14.10 and $l6.
C. A. McGregor topped this market with a pen of 261 fiveyear Romneys making $2O. The interest in adult ewes was solely restricted to sheep of quality. Lighter and poorer sorts often could not attract a bid of $5.
Ewe lambs sold at similar rates to recent sales at Addington. The best went to $17.80. The yardings this year were 3576 two-tooth (3575 last year), 4322 adults (4555) and 1621 ewe lambs (3024). About half the sheep offered went to local farmers. Buyers from the Blenheim, Culverden, Oxford, and Rangiora districts were also very active.
