N.Z. hockey teams
The New Zealand senior and under-23 women’s hockey teams to play the best nations in the world in Palmerston North in May have been named. The two teams will play in an eight-nation tournament against West Germany, the Netherlands. Australia, the United States. Can-* ada and Japan from May 15 to 22. Half of the New Zealand team of 16 is new to international tournament play, and the coach. Margaret Hiha. Will have a difficult task ahead of her moulding a team that wil perform creditably. The tournament is important to New Zealand because rankings from it will be used to decide the top 12 teams for the women's World Cup tournament in Kuala Lumpur'next year. * A surprise omission from the senior team is the Canterbury captain and defender. Chris McCauley. Her level-headed approach under pressure is her greatest attribute and the New Zealand side could miss that stability. The under-23 team contains four of the Canterbury team that won the national under-21 championship last year. It was a great pity that Maree Flannery another member of the team, was injured soon after the tournament. The injury put her out for
the rest of the season, and obviously out of contention for the national junior side. The teams are.— New Zealand— Lesley Murdoch (Canterbury). Barbara Tilden (Wellington). Mary Clinton. Robyn Blackman (Canterbury): Fay Matthews. Karen Thomas (Auckland), Judy Rawcliffe, Jill Smith (Hawkes Bay): Sue McLeish (Waikato, vice-captain). Lesley Monk. Marianne Gray.
