Avonside I unbeaten

Avonside I wrapped up an unbeaten record in the first round-robin section of the Canterbury senior table tennis with a comfortable 9-3 win over Riccarton I in a ninth-round match. The consistent trio of Bill Scott, Michael Burrowes and Bert Thompson, with occasional help from the New Zealand women's champion, Jan Morris, will begin their Second-round games with a maximum 18 points. Their nearest rivals. Linwood I, lie two points behind, wnile Avonside 11 are a similar distance back in third place.

Those teams, plus Avonside 111 and Riccarton 11. have qualified for the A-grade cut-off roundrobin. The remaining five teams in the competition will play an A-reserve round-robin.

■ Perhaps the unluckiest side to miss promotion was Riccarton I. Led by a veteran senior player, Colin Tipper, the side had a good

singles record and finished equal with Riccarton II on points after the final round. However, the second team was promoted because it had won the match between the two.
