‘Sickening’ killing of dolphin
PA Auckland Auckland fisheries officers investigating the apparent spear-gunning of a dolphin near Snells Beach are “sickened” by the killing. The 2.1-metre dolphin had been seen near the beach on Saturday, apparently feeding on mullet. Later two people, believed to be youths, were seen carrying either a rifle or speargun in the area. The dolphin was later washed up on the beach, dead, with a 12cm-deep wound through one eye.
A regional fisheries officer, Mr Neill MacDonald, said officers were very upset about the killing and had begun a “vigorous” investigation.
“The dolphin is a thing of beauty, harmless to people,” he said.
If it could be proved the dolphin was killed deliberately, the offenders face a maximum fine of $lOOO.
