Locals make good in tennis

A Christchurch salesman and a Woodend farmer showed the touring tennis professionals a thing or two in surviving two rounds of qualifying play in the Air New Zealand tennis tournament at Wilding Park yesterday.
As the result of their earnest efforts against Australian and American opponents, Alister Chapman and Hugh Robinson will take their places in the field of 64 competitors when the first round of this satellite circuit event is played today.
There will be no little
local interest in the play, for Brett Hibbert and Michael Mooney are also in the draw. But Mooney has a daunting assignment — his first round rival is an accomplished Australian, Warren Maher, who is seeded fourth.
After his victory in the Otago leg of the circuit last week, following hard on the heels of two semi-final places in the North Shore and New Zealand championship events, Bruce Derlin
(Auckland) was a certainty for the position of top seed. He is listed ahead of two fellow members of the recently announced Davis Cup squad, David Mustard and Jeffrey Simpson, and they are followed by Maher, Randy Evett (United States), and the redoubtable Onny Parun.
Yeterday’s play was confined to qualifying matches, with 51 hopeful players vying for 16 places in the draw, while tournament officials struggled with transport and accommodation problems. Most of the players are being billeted, and the Wilding Park pavilion bulged with humanity as billeters queued up the meet billetees. Results of the qualifying matches were:— First round
