Owners clash

NZPA staff correspondent Melbourne The star two-year-old, Rancher (Brave LadAwakening), once again proved too strong for the New Zealand-bred Grosvenor (Sir Tristram—My Tricia) in the 1200 m Diamond Prelude for colts and geldings, at Sandown on Saturday but it was Rancher’s narrowest victory, the unbeaten colt going to the line only a long neck clear of Grosvenor. After the race, while waiting for the horses to return to the mounting yard, Charlie Waymouth, trainer and part-owner of Rancher and Geoff Tobias, part-owner of Grosvenor, exchanged words and clashed physically in a public fracas which bought each a $5OO fine from the stewards. Rancher, now unbeaten in six starts led all the way to beat Grosvenor, which was sixth at the 800 m mark and two lengths behind the champion with 200 m to go.
