Fast cycling time trials
The fastest batch of kilometre time trials recorded in New Zealand cycling were accomplished at Wanganui’s Cooks Gardens track last evening.
Anthony Cuff, overdue for a decent kilometre ride, recorded 1 min 8.9 s to break the arbitrary standard for the Brisbane Commonwealth Games set by the national cycling selectors. But there were a host close behind him. Murray Steele, of Canterbury. did 1:9.2; Graeme Miller,
formerly of Blenheim now of Auckland, did 1:9.3; Michael Mcßedmond (Palmerston North) 1:9.6; and Clem Captein (Waikato), 1:9.8. And Brian Fowler, also of Canterbury, did easily a personal best of 1:11.3. More kilometre time trials are scheduled for later in the week, probably on Saturday, and the remainder of last evening’s programme was taken up with an omnium series. This was won by Cuff, with 20 points, one clear of Steele and five clear of Captein.
