Lyttelton gains revenge
Home Bakery Lyttelton exacted revenge for a "defeat three days earlier with a 2-1 victory over Papanui in another tight premier men’s softball game at Papanui Domain last evening. This game was over in the regulation seven innings compared with the marathon 12innings affair of Saturday, but there was again little between the two teams although Lyttelton shaded Papanui on the hit count by four to two. Lyttelton scored through John Kottier in the top of the first innings and Doug Baker in the third while Papanui’s only run came in the bottom of the second
when the pitcher, Colin Sutherland, batted in his catcher, Rennie Tai. The match looked like being prolonged when in the bottom of the seventh Papanui had runners on second and third bases with only one down. However, Phil Claude was tagged out at home and then, with batters again on second and third, Ross Fife “fanned” Michael Bishop for his sixth strike-out of the game. Sutherland took nine strikeouts for Papanui, but conceded more safe hits with Dennis Wiersma batting best for the “Port" side. Points:—Burnside 6, A.G.C. United 4, Papanui 2, Lyttelton 2.
