Australia fights back in test

NZPA Adelaide Trailing the West Indies by 151 runs on the first innings, Australia was 100 for two in its second innings at stumps on the third day of the third cricket test at Adelaide Oval yesterday. With the score at 35 for two, Australia was in trouble but a fighting unbeaten third-wicket partnership of 65 between Bruce Laird and Alan Border restored some authority to the innings. Earlier the West Indies were all out for 389 after the last four wickets added 195 runs. Both Greg, Chappell and Kim Hughes will bat in Australia’s second innings although neither was on the field when the West Indies batted. Hughes is down to bat at the fall of the next wicket with Chappell following him, but it is doubtful if Dennis Lillee, the third casualty, will, take any further part in the test. With the swift demise of Graeme Wood, who was brilliantly caught low down by Michael Holding following through, Australia was one for ten. There was a further setback when John Dyson was caught at slip attempting to drive Joel Gamer. The West Indies’ strong recovery from 194 for six was led by Larry Gomes, who finished with an unbeaten 124 made in 404 minutes with nine fours.
