London taxi seized

PA Auckland Customs officers at Auckland Airport have seized a London taxi. Three New Zealanders recently completed an overland trip in the 1973-model taxi from Britain, through Europe, the Middle East and India to Australia. The chief customs officer for enforcement at the airport, Mr Stuart Hartley, said yesterday that the taxi was seized after inquiries into alleged breaches of the Customs Act.

He said the alleged breaches could involve the production of false documents for the purpose of duty-free entry to New Zealand. < Mr Hartley said the department was -considering laying charges against a New Plymouth man who owned the taxi. Customs officers expected any court case would be a "speedy” one because the owner intended to return to Britain, where he worked. “It is an authentic taxi —

straight from the streets of London," said Mr Hartley. "It is as though it came from Trafalgar Square straight into our seizure shed.” “In London it would probably be worth SNZ3OOO. It is a collector’s item, I suppose." Mr Hartley said that if, as a result of any court case, the diesei-powered taxi was forfeited to the Crown, the vehicle would probably be put up for auction.
