Spirit of Adventure, on 4000km trip
I PA Auckland , The Spirit of Adventure Ithe Auckland-based training ship for young people left Auckland this week on her biggest summer journey. The I trip to Stewart Island and i returning to Auckland through Cook Strait and up the west coast of the North Island, will cover about 4000 km. The cruise will consist of eight 10-day “voyages” for different groups of youngsters alternating between boys and girls. Twenty-five teen-aged girls from throughout the North Island were on board when the vessel set sail for
Napier on the first leg of the journey. Four week-end trips for groups of adults will also be run. One of these groups will bring the 32m schooner back to Auckland from Whitianga at the end of the cruise. The operations director of the Spirit of Adventure, Commander R. E. Lawry, said that the last leg' of the journey would be the 199th voyage by the training ship. The vessel w r as commissioned in 1971. Commander Lawry said: “This is the most extensive summer journey undertaken with 200 young people going in the ship.”
