Israel Egypt sign accord
NZPA-Reuter Cairo Egypt and Israel have sighed an agreement clearing the way for Israel’s final Withdrawal from Sinai to be completed next April.
The agreement resolving the main outstanding problems, including the dismantling of Israeli settlements and compensation for various installations was reached after two days of talks in Cairo between the Israeli Defence Minister (Mr Ariel Sharon) 1 and the Egyptian Foreign Minister (Mr Kamal Hassan Ali).
Israel is due to return the last part of Sinai, captured from Egypt in the 1967 Middle East .War, by April 26 under the terms of the 1979 Camp David peace accords which ended three decades of hostility between Caito and the Jewish State. Mr Sharon who led Israeli troops across the Suez Canal from Sinai in the 1973 war, praised what he described as the friendly and warm atmosphere which prevailed during the talks. Both men said the accord was a great achievement.
Mr Sharon said both , sides would meet again in Israel on March 15 in case there were some problems “which I don’t see at the present time.”
He said: “We believe that we are moving forward and that peace will last as we all hope for ever.” Mr Ali said a problem still to be worked out concerned
the Mediterranean town of Rafah, on t|ie border between Egypt and the Israelioccupied Gaza Strip. The Egyptian Foreign Minister added that the border was not in contention. Mr Sharon said an IsraeliEgyptian sub-committee would meet on January 24 to try to solve problems facing inhabitants of the divided town.
The semi-official Cairo daily “Al-Ahfam” yesterday said a number of Egyptian officials representing various Ministries would be posted in southern Sinai from February 25 to prepare for Egypt’s take-over of the last segment of the peninsula.
