Afghan round-up
NZPA Islamabad Hundreds of men — some of them approaching their 50s — have been rounded up in Kabul over the last week and drafted into the Afghan Army, Western diplomatic sources have said. The new “recruits” were picked up at roadblocks, often Soviet guarded, and given armoured escorts to Soviet-ringed assembly points in the capital where Afghan Army officers promptly dratted them, pay-
ing scant attention to exemptions normally allowed by the authorities. Diplomatic sources said many recruits immediately left Kabul to join Government troops in various provincial centres. One planeload, according to an Afghan official cited by the diplomats, flew aboout 100 men to Mazar I Sharif in the north. The Army swoop occurred after the demobilisation last month of 10.000 soldiers who had completed their military service.
