New bid to put station on peak

Another attempt will be made on Saturday to fly equipment for a marine VHF repeater station to the summit of Herbert Peak, on Banks Peninsula. An Iroquois helicopter from Wigram will try to lift a 4550-litre concrete tank and two 12-metre telegraph poles from a farm at Diamond Harbour to the top of the mountain. Improved communication through the VHF repeater, which is possibly a world "first" in marine radio, could be a life-saver for “boaties," said the chairman of the Lyttelton Marine VHF Association. Mr Keith Drayton.

“It will certainly be the

first two-frequency repeater on the marine band in New Zealand, and probably in the world," he said. The VHF would provide an affordable means of communications for owners of small boats. A hand-held VHF set would cost $4OO to $5OO.
